More Alexis Hall musings
Jun. 15th, 2024 10:12 amI have discovered that I have a bizarre habit? of entirely misunderstanding AJH's books when first reading a description of them. And I mean *entirely*. After I read about the reissue of Glitterland in the Alexis Hall newsletter I went to borrow it from the library and discovered I had borrowed it before but not read it, and my memory of the book I had borrowed was that it was about ice skating! As a one-off I could excuse my brain because the cover does look "ice-skatey", but it's happened again 😂
The first ever Alexis Hall I read was Rosalie Palmer Takes The Cake and in the back of that was an ad for the second book which I remember being about one of the show crew but now I'm reading Paris Daillancourt Is About To Crumble and it isn't! Luckily Alexis Hall is now on my 'read everything' list so I won't be reading descriptions anymore.
Btw, I like it here, the void is a friendly listener.
And now, AJH-induced personal character growth! Alfie Bell in Pansies is very different from his other characters in that most of them think too much, Alfie acts first and thinks afterwards. I have acres of patience and sympathy for the characters who think too much and whose over-thinking causes harm but Alfie just made me cross. Reading Pansies again and thinking about my reactions I realised the fault wasn't with Alfie it was with me. I need to understand learn to give the same allowance in fucking up to characters (and people) who don't think enough that I do to those who think too much.
